EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Class of 2022, Estonia

Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics

Kuldar Väärsi’s robotic solutions are redesigning the future — from defense forces to the final frontier.

Kuldar Väärsi dared to dream big: he saw Estonia, one of the smallest countries in the European Union, as the perfect place to build a groundbreaking robotics company.

Kuldar is CEO of Milrem Robotics, Europe’s leading robotics and autonomous systems developer and systems integrator. His vision is to provide innovative robotic solutions that protect individuals in challenging environments, from conflict zones to natural disasters, inhospitable terrain and even outer space. However, he also believes these solutions must fulfill a higher purpose.

The Multiscope Rescue System was designed to withstand harsh conditions and reach areas difficult to access and considered too dangerous for firefighters and rescue services. The company’s Robotic Forester automates the most crucial part of forest management — forest regeneration — which increases the rate of reforestation. By using robots to plant trees, the world can become a greener place to live.

Starting with a motivated team of 30 with a focus on robotic applications in the defense industry, the company has grown from strength to strength. Today, Milrem Robotics has clients in 14 countries and a product portfolio that has expanded from one vehicle to full robotic systems. Kuldar’s priority in the next five years is to lead the company to the point where it can finance its own growth.

As Milrem Robotics looks toward the future, the final frontier really excites Kuldar. His vision is to advance robotic systems development for use in space exploration. The company has already been contracted by the European Space Agency.
