Australia finalist, Samantha Schwarz, has been awarded this year’s Young Tax Professional of the Year title at the global final held in Amsterdam. Samantha was picked from among the 21 country winners vying for the title. Samantha will now gain hands-on experience at EY member firms’ offices in London, New York and Hong Kong as part of a 30-day global tour, and will have the opportunity to network with some of the world’s leading tax professionals.

Malaysia representative Carlos Wong Fook Chin took second prize, a 10-day visit to one of EY’s Area Tax Centers, while Daniel Lewis of South Africa was awarded third prize, an invitation to participate in an EY international client conference where he will have the opportunity to explore the most pertinent issues facing the global business community. The Inclusive Leadership Award also went to Daniel Lewis from South Africa, voted for by his peers for demonstrating exemplary leadership skills during the competition.

Young Tax Professional of the Year was established by EY in 2010 to reward and foster the next generation of tax leaders. All competitors are selected in their home countries by EY member firms in collaboration with local universities and finalists hold their respective home country titles.

This year saw candidates from the 21 represented countries convene to participate in technical workshops, case studies and interviews before a judging panel, which included EY leaders, academics and tax directors from major multinational companies.

Susan Pitter, Young Tax Professional of the Year sponsor and EY Deputy Global Vice Chair – Tax, says:

“The digital age is changing the relationship between tax authorities and taxpayers, and the new generation of tax professionals need to understand this impact, and ways to rise to the challenge. At EY, we constantly work toward providing the next generation with the right skills to excel in such an increasingly global and competitive environment.

“The Young Tax Professional of the Year experience offers the opportunity for the next generation of tax professionals to thrive globally. With the continuing disruption of the tax function we are seeing exciting new approaches to the industry, and we hope that all the 2018 country winners will be motivated to go and become future leaders of the tax profession.”
