Over the past 23 years, Dang Tai Luk has worked tirelessly to turn his small newsstand into Mynews Holdings, the largest homegrown convenience store in Malaysia, with more than 500 outlets, over 2,000 employees and a listing on the Malaysia Stock Exchange. The journey has involved long days and sleepless nights, but Tai Luk believes the sacrifices have been worth it — he has fulfilled his ambitions to bring his family out of hardship and to give Malaysians a world-class retail experience.

Throughout the growth of Mynews, Tai Luk has always spotted shifting cultural changes and adapted products to suit customer demands. He moved from the newsstand business into convenience stores, then took on the ready-to-eat market as busy customers looked for freshly made meals. “We’re expanding very aggressively,” he explains. “What we’re doing is something very new and different.”

Tai Luk says education changed the trajectory of his life, so his company works with underprivileged students to offer them education and training.
