EY Ireland employees have raised €100,000 this festive season for Focus Ireland and Peter McVerry Trust, to support the homeless and those at risk of homelessness. Over 100 EY Ireland employees participated in a Sleep-Out outside the firm’s Dublin and Cork offices to raise the much-needed funds for both charities during Christmastime.
EY employees from each of the firm’s five offices in the Republic of Ireland, travelled to EY’s Cork and Dublin offices to “Sleep-Out” for the homeless. This gesture of solidarity resulted in over €90,000 being raised, which EY topped up to €100,000 as well as covering all administrative fees so that every cent donated went to the chosen charities. Focus Ireland and Peter McVerry Trust will each receive €50,000 following the Sleep-Out.
Frank O’Keeffe, Managing Partner for EY Ireland, commented: “The issue of homelessness is never more real to each and every one of us than it is at Christmas-time. For those who are experiencing homelessness, Christmas can be an experience very different to those of us who are fortunate enough to have a place to call home. It is therefore essential that we give to causes such as Focus Ireland and Peter McVerry Trust, whose good work helps to provide a safe and welcoming environment for those impacted by homelessness. I am so proud of each of our people who slept out for this incredible cause and to everyone who dug deep to sponsor their colleagues taking part.”
According to the Focus Ireland, as of October 2018, there are over 1,709 families accessing emergency accommodation, which includes 3,725 children. Overall, there are 9,724 people in Ireland experiencing homelessness.
Commenting on the Sleep-Out, Nell Ward, Corporate Fundraising Manager, Peter McVerry Trust said, “The success of the EY Sleep Out has once again surpassed all expectations. We are truly grateful for the support of EY and everyone who took part in and donated towards this important event. The commitment of EY colleagues, family and friends in supporting the sleep out will have a real and lasting impact on the lives of many people impacted by homelessness this Christmas and beyond. Their support will ensure that Peter McVerry Trust can continue to help more people out of homelessness for good. The €50,000 raised will go towards Peter McVerry Trust’s housing-led response to ending homelessness. It will also fit-out and furnish kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms for ten apartments – helping to bring more empty homes back into use.”
Kevin O’Sullivan, Corporate Partnerships for Focus Ireland added: “Focus Ireland is delighted with the support of the EY Sleep Out again this year. The commitment of EY and drive of all the staff, their friends and colleagues to raise awareness and funds for those at risk of, or experiencing homelessness is amazing, especially at this time of the year. Focus Ireland is committed to preventing homelessness and providing permanent homes for individuals, families and young people. Currently, we move one family into a home every day. The €50,000 raised for Focus Ireland through the 2018 EY Sleep Out will help our work with families and young people. It could help 90 young people to live independently and support 10 families at risk of homelessness to remain in their homes.”
