With the aim of enhancing our ability to respond to client needs for tax controversy and dispute resolution services, Ernst & Young Tax Co. (Headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Managing Partner: Kazuhiro Ebina) has welcomed Mr. Atsushi Fujieda to the practice as our advisory counsel. Mr. Fujieda led the tax litigation practice at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu for many years, specializing in transfer pricing and other fields.
With this addition to our practice, we enhance our ability to provide tax controversy services and provide coverage for tax audits and litigation in seamless conjunction with EY Law Co., and better position ourselves to provide the support our clients need to reach dispute resolutions amidst stricter tax enforcement.
Mr. Fujieda is one of Japan's foremost experts on tax litigation and has a wealth of experience handling tax dispute litigation. He has represented clients on many landmark tax dispute cases in Japan, including the revocation of a transfer pricing correction issued to Honda Motor and NGK Insulators, Ltd. through legal proceedings; the revocation of a transfer pricing correction issued to Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited through filing of a request for re-examination; a Supreme Court ruling declaring the imposition of additional taxes on Isuzu Motors Limited in conjunction to a temporary special corporation tax to be in violation of the provisions of the Local Tax Act; and the revocation of taxes imposed on the NTT DoCoMo group in relation to the depreciation of entrance circuits.
He has taught international taxation classes as a professor of practice at the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law and Hitotsubashi Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy, and has published books and articles on both and case commentary and the practice of transfer pricing regimes and anti-tax haven measures. At EY, Mr. Fujieda will leverage his wide range of knowledge and experience to meet the needs of all our clients.
Kazuhiro Ebina (Managing Partner, Ernst & Young Tax Co.) commented on the occasion as follows:
“With the globalization of Japanese corporates, there is increasing complexity and sophistication in the corporate tax environment. This has increased tax risks and caused an upswing in tax litigation. With the addition of Mr. Fujieda to EY in the capacity of advisory counsel, we have the opportunity to leverage his extensive experience to enhance our tax dispute resolution services and continue supporting the growth of Japanese businesses.”
Ernst & Young Tax Co. will continue to improve our tax controversy capabilities and persist in our endeavors to be a firm which both provides clients with the services most suitable to their tax needs and which plays a leading role in shaping the future of Japan.
