Depositaries: key challenges and developments

AIF Club – Depositaries: key challenges and developments

While the Pandemic is still not overcome, the growth of the Luxembourg investment fund industry is fueled by a lot of optimism. During 2021 we have seen the Assets under Management growing to a record high of 5.7 TRN EUR from 4.7 TRN EUR before the first lock-down in March 2020. However, at the same time the number of depositaries shrunk from 61 to 57 evidencing pressure to revisit target operating models from a regulatory, people, process, and technology perspective for staying relevant in the Luxembourg marketplace.

Outcomes of prudential supervision of the CSSF also highlight that some players still have key deficiencies in these areas, which can put at risk their reputation and business growth. The latest changes to the AIFMD and ELTIF Directive also need to be carefully analyzed by depositaries, as AIFMs will also be targeting more and more Retail investors going forward. We will therefore explore with you the outcomes from the CSSF’s prudential supervision, strategic implications of the AIFMD and ELTIF revision, and priorities within your technological agendas.
