1. Administrative Notices

1. Press Release by the Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Business

During a press conference held on 30th April 2020, the Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Business provided the following:

  • The COVID-19 Wage Supplement will be extended to May and June. Those applying for the supplement in May will be paid from May onwards. Applications for both March and April had to be submitted by today, 30th April. It was clarified that those who applied for the wage supplement in March and April need not apply again, but will continue to benefit from the COVID Wage Supplement until further notice.
  • Discussions regarding the ‘restart strategy’ are now at advanced stages. The uplifting of restrictions in some economic sectors shall be done in a gradual manner.

2. Commissioner for Revenue: Extension of Tax Deferral Scheme

The Commissioner for Revenue has published a notice providing for an extension of the COVID-19 Fiscal Assistance tax deferral scheme. The extension is such that the deferral scheme will now apply for provisional tax, employee taxes, maternity fund payments and social security contributions (including of self-employed persons), and VAT which fall due in March up to and including June 2020.

The settlement periods for such deferrals will be announced in due course. The application deadline for this scheme has been extended to 15th May 2020.

3. Commissioner for Revenue: Electronic Filing Extension of Corporate Income Tax Returns for 2020

The Commissioner for Revenue has published a notice outlining the extensions for the deadline of electronic filing of income tax returns for companies, as follows:

  • Electronic submissions for companies whose year end for 2019 was end January 2019 – end August 2019 are due on 31st July 2020;
  • Companies whose year end for 2019 was 30th September 2019 are due to make electronic submissions by 31st August 2020;
  • Companies whose year end for 2019 was 31st October 2019 are due to make electronic submissions by 30th September 2020;
  • Companies whose year end for 2019 was 30th November 2019 are due to make electronic submissions by 2nd November 2020; and
  • Companies whose year end for 2019 was 31st December 2019 are due to make electronic submissions by 27th November 2020.

The notice clarifies that these extensions apply only to the electronic filing of tax returns, and not to tax payments. Manual tax returns and all tax payments must reach the Office of the Commissioner for Revenue by the due dates contemplated by the Income Tax Acts.

4. Commissioner for Revenue: Y/A 2020 Tax Returns for Companies

The Commissioner for Revenue has published a notice outlining that the year of assessment 2020 electronic income tax return for companies is now available on the Commissioner for Revenue’s online services. The published income tax return does not cater for tax consolidation. An updated version for this purpose will be made available in due course.

5.      FIAU: Extension of deadline for the registration on the STR Submission System – goAML

The FIAU has extended the registration deadline for subject persons to register on the new STR Submission system (goAML) to 13th May 2020.
