Economic update: Chris Meilak & Orlanda Grech (30 mins)

An overview of Malta’s main macroeconomic indicators and economic performance, key contributing factors, and an outlook for the short to medium term, while taking Covid-19 into account. Emerging trends and observations will be discussed, providing insights into likely changes in behaviour of economic agents and socio-economic aspects.

Financial update: Shawn Falzon & Frank Cassar (30 mins)

The pandemic has tested society and posed hard questions to CFOs. They find themselves in a difficult balancing act: responding to the Covid-19 pandemic with resilience, while generating sustainable, long-term value for multiple stakeholders — shareholders, employees, customers, communities and other parties — by focusing not only on financial outcomes but also on environmental and social impacts. This session will explore some of the ever-changing challenges in financial reporting.

Tax & Vat update: Robert Attard & Saviour Bezzina (30 mins)

Board oversight of a company’s tax compliance and tax risk management is increasingly challenging given the fast-evolving tax regulatory landscape. Having a robust tax corporate governance framework can help.

Tech update: Michael Azzopardi (30 mins)

How can your board drive decision making from operational data? How can digitalisation improve process efficiency and give you insight in the way the company is operating? Are you providing the right digital experience to your customers and partners? How can your board respond to new opportunities and risks presented by cybersecurity, AI  and other emerging technologies? 

Future Consumer Survey update: Gilbert Guillaumier (30 mins)

This session aims to provide an update on emerging consumer trends and behaviours as well as temporary reactions to the Covid-19 crisis, which point to more fundamental shifts, and what the consumer post Covid-19 might be like.

Chris Meilak |  Associate Partner | Economic Consulting 

Chris Meilak is an Associate Partner and Economist in EY’s Transaction Advisory Services, leading the local Valuation, Modelling & Economics service offering.  He joined EY in 2006 and has been involved in economic research, business valuations and business modelling, cost-benefit analysis and financial & economic feasibility studies. These projects range across a range of sectors.  He is a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta in Industrial Economics and previously also in Econometrics and Time Series Analysis.  Chris is a Certified Public Accountant and holds an MA in Economics and the ACCA degree and is a recognised lecturer in both Economics and Accountancy in various educational institutions.

Orlanda Grech |  Manager | Economic Consulting

Orlanda Grech is an Economist and Manager at EY Malta as part of the Valuation, Modelling and Economics sub-service line, with a special focus on economic advisory. Her main service offerings relate to macro-economic assessments, as well as cost-benefit analyses, economic impact assessments, national strategy formulation, and market studies across a range of sectors, including the environment, health, education, culture, and R&I. She also holds a BHons in Economics from the University of Malta, and an MSc in Economics from the University of Edinburgh.

Shawn Falzon | Partner | Assurance Leader

Shawn Falzon is a Partner and Assurance Leader at EY Malta. He has been working with EY since 2000.  Shawn is a fellow member of the Malta Institute of Accountants and fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy and Management from the University of Malta. He is an approved Auditor by the Malta Financial Services Authority and is authorized to audit accounts of insurance companies and insurance intermediaries.   Shawn serves a number of Public Interest entities and other high profile clients, and is a Council Member of the Malta Institute of Accountants.   

Frank Cassar | Senior Manager | Assurance

Frank Cassar graduated from the University of Malta with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Management in 2007, is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a practising certificate in Auditing. He is currently working as a Senior Manager within EY Malta’s Assurance practice. He serves a number of high profile audit engagements including listed and public-interest entities, amongst others, both locally and abroad. His main focus is on audits of insurance entities and other financial institutions. Frank is also a visiting lecturer and examiner at the University of Malta, delivering lectures in financial reporting. Besides this, he has participated in various training programs in auditing both locally and abroad. Frank is a co-author of an academic paper presented at the 2013 Annual Congress of the European Accounting Association in Paris.

Dr Robert Attard | Partner | Tax Policy Leader

Robert Attard is Partner and Tax Policy Leader, EY, Central & South East Europe, a tenured senior lecturer at the University of Malta and member of the European Association of Tax Law Professors. He has paid lecturing/ speaking visits at the University of London, CTL (University of Cambridge), the University of Amsterdam and other universities. The Court of Appeal has described him as ‘a leading commentator on tax law’ referring to his publications. Robert developed a detailed knowledge of tax aspects of the ECHR drafting submissions in transnational cases. Robert is a published author on tax law (Hart Publishing and I.B.F.D.) arguing Malta’s leading tax cases. He has a wide ranging experience in advising successive Maltese governments on tax policy. Robert has a long track record in all areas of international tax law. Furthermore, he’s highly sought after for his interpretation of domestic tax law, tax treaties and EU tax directives. 

Saviour Bezzina | Senior Manager | Tax

Saviour Bezzina, a Senior Manager within EY Malta, is a warranted Accountant with over 10 years working in Taxation, specifically on VAT. Saviour joined EY in 2006 and over the years has provided VAT consultancy services to a range of local and international clients.

Michael Azzopardi | Senior Manager | Technology Consulting

Michael Azzopardi is a Senior Manager, leading EY IT Advisory service line in Malta. Michael is an IT professional with more than 20 years of experience in strategy, architecture, software engineering and innovation practices working in global organizations. Over the last 16 years he held several positions at Credit Suisse in Switzerland and the United States. His strength is in bringing together various disciplines of IT including program and project management, software engineering, security practices and integration architecture to deliver sustainable strategic solutions that deliver value to the organization.

Gilbert Guillaumier | Associate Partner | Strategy and Transactions 

Gilbert Guillaumier is an Associate Partner in EYs Transaction Advisory Services team.  He joined EY in 2002 and has over 16 years professional experience assisting a number of diverse clients.  Gilbert has assisted government bodies and private sector clients seeking to structure, invest and develop a number of projects, as well as in the preparation of financial models, feasibility studies, financial analyses and due diligence support.  Gilbert has led a range of engagements in the UK, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Switzerland, providing services across Transaction Support and business risk services for a number of multi-national institutions. He speaks fluent English, Italian and Maltese, holds an MSc in Finance and is a Certified Public Accountant and a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants.
