On 12 June 2018, Singapore and Kenya signed an Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation (the Treaty).
Once ratified by both jurisdictions, the Treaty will come into force. The Treaty was signed in addition to the Bilateral Investment Treaty, which was also signed on the same day.
With Enterprise Singapore opening a new overseas centre in Kenya earlier in June – its third in Africa – to serve as a regional hub for East Africa, the signing of the Treaty with Kenya is timely, given the growing importance of the African countries as emerging markets that Singapore businesses can expand into when internationalising their operations beyond Singapore.
