UK & Ireland: engaging our people
The ability to manage our environmental impacts effectively is significantly affected by the behaviour of our people. By engaging our staff and influencing sustained positive behavioural change, we can achieve maximum effectiveness and value for money from operational changes and investments in our infrastructure, as well as helping to ensure that our people remain proud to work for EY.
As a provider of professional services, we must also demonstrate sound environmental management standards to support our client facing teams, including Climate Change and Sustainability Services. A responsible approach in our own organisation helps existing and potential clients feel confident about our ability to support them on environmental management and sustainability issues of their own.
How we influence behavioural change
We have an active network of over 100 ‘Environment Champions’ across our UK&I locations who help bring to life our initiatives around carbon related-issued. These volunteers feel passionately about reducing our environmental impact and inspiring others to do the same. They work alongside the Environment Manager to raise awareness, promote events and campaigns, engage our people and provide feedback on specific issues.
We regularly conduct firm-wide 'Environment Week' campaigns to highlight the significant environmental impacts from our business activities i.e. energy, waste, and travel. They include national schemes and communications as well as local office events.
We also regularly support and participate in national events (such as National Bike Week) and global campaigns (e.g. WWF’s Earth Hour).
We conduct extensive environmental training and knowledge development within our operational teams and with key suppliers. This covers key global sustainability issues, environmental management systems, our policy, impacts and aspects, objectives and targets, responsibilities, legal requirements, mitigating measures and information resources.
All new employees receive basic environmental awareness training during their corporate induction, including the measures we take to reduce our emissions and how individual employees can take action to reduce their own environmental impact in the workplace, at client sites and at home.
