Faisal Lalani and Jamil Mawji

Jamil and Faisal both have had varied and successful careers prior to founding National Care Group.  

Faisal founded the 99p Stores in 2001, remaining in the Managing Director role for 14 years.  The 99p Stores had an extensive national presence with over 250 branches and a turnover of £426m, employing over 7,000 employees.  After securing institutional funding from Barclays Ventures, Faisal exited 99p Stores to a FTSE 250 company.  

With a background in Private Equity, Jamil had invested significantly in the care sector over 15 years, before exiting his PE fund in 2015. He then established a personal investment firm with Faisal to own and operate new and innovative businesses.     

As co-founders, Faisal and Jamil wanted to create a sustainable and innovative business that had a positive impact on society.  They identified a gap in the market for a care provider that focuses on delivering the best of care in a setting that makes the individual feel at home. It was this shared vision that led them to co-found National Care Group Ltd (NCG), which today is one of the UK’s largest specialist adult care providers.  

Since its inception in March 2016, NCG now has over 2,200 dedicated staff who care and support over 1,200 individuals with a variety of complex needs to live a rewarding a fulfilling life.  

Jamil and Faisal see themselves as disruptive innovators, in what has previously been described as a stale and unresponsive market. To ensure the care they provide is bespoke to meet the individual’s needs, NCG remains at the forefront of adapting services using innovative technology and tailored care plans. They are committed to investing in assistive technology to provide the least restrictive support possible to the individual.  

The pair’s commitment to growth and innovation has seen them recognised in the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards: Growing Business Category, Great British Entrepreneur Awards:  Scale Up Entrepreneur, Laing Buisson Finalists Awards for the care industry, Barclays Entrepreneur Awards: Scale-Up Entrepreneur Awards and EY Entrepreneur Awards North West 2019.
