The better the question
How can a charity safeguard themselves from cyber threats with little time or resources?
Cybersecurity is one of the biggest challenges facing charities today.
At EY, we are committed to making a positive impact on our communities. Ability EY is the network that supports disability at EY including mobility, mental health, stammering, deaf and hard of hearing, dyslexia and autism.
Through the network, we have been able to build a collaboration with Whizz-Kidz to help make a real difference to young peoples’ lives. It is through this collaboration that we have been able to use our extensive knowledge and experience of data security to help Whizz-Kidz tackle one of the biggest issues facing them today: how can a charity safeguard themselves from cyber threats with little time or resources?
The better the answer
Increased protection at an accelerated pace
We undertook the Cyber Program Accelerator assessment for Whizz-Kidz which allowed the charity to gain a better understanding of their cybersecurity position, and the actions required to address areas of risk that our assessment identified.
Data security poses a huge challenge to a charity such as Whizz-Kidz. Disabled children’s health records are rightly classified as sensitive information linked to vulnerable individuals.
The financial costs and reputational damage to such an organization falling victim to a data breach would be devastating. While they are working hard to make a difference on the front lines, data security can be a low priority for charities. They often lack the resources and technical expertise to educate their teams about the dangers and implement the necessary safeguards.
So, as a part of our collaboration, in 2017 we undertook the Cyber Program Accelerator assessment for Whizz-Kidz. The pro-bono assessment focused on the maturity of cyber controls related to their core database, allowing the charity to gain a better understanding of their cybersecurity position, and the actions required to address areas of risk that our assessment identified.
The assessment also provided Whizz-Kidz with the data they need to compare themselves against similar organizations.
EY is continuing to support the charity through several findings and recommendations – namely on third-party risk and GDPR – through 2018 and 2019.
The better the world works
Focusing on what matters
Through our collaboration, we have been able to help Whizz-Kidz strengthen its defenses as the cyber threat landscape continues to evolve.
Feeling better equipped to protect themselves, the charity can concentrate on its mission to make a life-changing difference in the lives of children and young people. EY’s work in helping Whizz Kidz to protect itself from cybercrime not only benefits the charity itself, but more importantly, those it seeks to help.
