In 2008, Jason Wersland was riding his motorcycle to one of his last chiropractic school exams when a car driving the wrong way on the freeway cut him off. Months after the accident, debilitating pain kept him from working or even sleeping through the night. Drawing on his chiropractic training, Wersland laid out power tools on his coffee table and built a device capable of delivering the force his body needed. The benefits were evident immediately. As he used the percussive massage device over time, his body recovered and his pain subsided.

After tinkering with a few prototypes, Wersland perfected the Theragun, a handheld massage device that targets tense and injured muscle tissue with repetitive therapeutic pressure. Eager to share his creation with the world but lacking business experience, Wersland enlisted Benjamin Nazarian to experience Theragun’s healing power firsthand. Nazarian’s slight spinal curvature caused his back to occasionally snarl with debilitating muscle tension. When Wersland used the Theragun on him, he experienced a painless deep tissue massage. Seeing the device’s potential to help people in pain, Nazarian joined as CEO.

Rebranded as Therabody in 2020, the company continues to expand its tension-reducing capabilities with therapeutic devices, apps, CBD products and educational outreach. Sales boomed at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, when people could not see massage therapists and chiropractors. Therabody’s founders celebrated their sales figures but also sensed a paradigm shift in people’s approach to self-care. “You only get one body, and a buildup of tension will kill it over time,” Wersland says.
