Mike Salguero | ButcherBox
When Mike Salguero started ButcherBox, a subscription-based online food delivery service, he looked to do much more than merely capitalize on a market opportunity. He set out to change the world by transforming the nature of the meat industry. His company delivers 100% grass-fed and pasture-raised beef, free-range organic chicken, heritage-breed pork, wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon and sea scallops directly to customers’ doors. Animals are humanely raised and not given antibiotics or hormones.
Salguero’s drive to find high-quality meat was born of necessity — and it was personal. His initial interest was to find better food to help his wife deal with Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid. As Salguero learned more about the food ecosystem and the idea for the company took shape, his passion grew and he expanded his scope to seek the best for all stakeholders. The end result is a system that is better for customers, animals, farmers, businesses and the planet.
We say to the farmer, ‘Raise the animal according to our standards, and you will get a price that’s way above the commodity market.’
An immigrant from Paraguay who came to the US as a child, Salguero started ButcherBox with $10,000 and a Kickstarter campaign to source pre-orders. Today, his company employs more than 100 people and dedicates itself to its values of authenticity, accountability, humility, being member-obsessed and relentlessly striving to improve. The effects of COVID-19 have only bolstered demand for the convenience of the company’s online delivery model. In the future, ButcherBox could expand beyond traditional e-commerce, possibly into retail stores, restaurants or farms.
