Tõnis Kaasik, Founder and Member of the Board, Ecometal AS
Tõnis Kaasik has dedicated his entire career toward creating a cleaner environment. Upon graduation, he began work as an environmental inspector. He saw firsthand the damage caused by pollution and waste and knew he wanted to do something practical to resolve the country’s environmental issues, so in 1999 he founded Ecometal.
The idea for the company came to him when he realized lead-acid batteries were not recycled in Estonia, despite the value of secondary lead in the world market. Ecometal was an opportunity for him to recycle waste, turn it into something useful and sell it back to manufacturers. Today, the company recycles 20,000 tons of old batteries each year, melting them down to produce 12,000 tons of secondary lead and lead alloys.
