Our response to the rise of tech.

  • Today we need to build skills in technology and digital for jobs we don’t even know exist yet.
  •  Technology is and will continue to transform the way we conduct our business activities.
  • The TechMBA is just one powerful step we’ve undertaken as a global organisation to support our technology consulting business.

We hear much today about reskilling ourselves for jobs that do not yet exist and ensuring that we are digitally savvy. It is therefore very exciting to say that EY recently (in July 2020) launched a world first, the TechMBA in association with Hult International Business School as a giant step forward in building our global tech capability. The programme is free to all our 284 000 employees around the world, including here in Africa, irrespective of any prior qualifications.

So why have we launched a technology-focused MBA, and why is it free to all staff? We understand that for many people, EY as one of the Big 4 accounting firms, is still seen largely as an assurance business focusing on accounting, audit and forensic services. While we certainly boast a strong Assurance business, what many don’t know is the extent and depth of our technology consulting business.

Technology is and will continue to transform the way we conduct our business activities. Let’s take auditing for example; what was once an intensive paper-based manual process is transforming into a digital practice powered by smart technology and robotics. EY’s response to this and the many challenges presented by the digitisation of business practices is to build robust technological capabilities in-house.

The TechMBA is just one powerful step we’ve undertaken as a global organisation to support our technology consulting business. A true maxim is that we never stop learning. And at EY, you’ll never stop learning and you’ll help our clients do the same. As the world undergoes unprecedented change, innovation is up to each of us, individually.  And the TechMBA is designed to support all our people on this journey, to develop the technical skillset and leadership mindset to implement the changing delivery mechanisms of many of our solutions to clients.

The entire programme is delivered online via the EY Learning and Development programme called EY Badges offering a combination of courses via providers such as Udemy, and real-world application through employees’ work experience at EY.

Employees in line to earn the TechBMA

employees from across the African continent have earned enough badges to qualify to enter the TechMBA programme and complete the remaining practical experience which is required.

Fourteen employees from across the African continent have earned enough badges to qualify to enter the TechMBA programme and complete the remaining practical experience which is required. They have earned badges where they learnt how to harness the power of new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, robotics as well as diversity and sustainable business practices. They will also be able to tailor their own curriculums to be uniquely placed to help businesses navigate at a time of tremendous disruption; helping them face ‘what’s next’.

These are challenging times for people all over the globe and so it is reassuring that I am part of an organisation so dedicated to helping people acquire specialist knowledge that they can apply almost immediately into the workplace to help problem solve and develop solutions.

Moreover, the EY Badges programme and TechMBA are designed to empower those with a growth mindset. We believe that all our employees can be leaders. Leadership is not about rank or title, but about the internalised idea of ‘how can I be better, how can I build and grow my career at my own pace and with skills I want to develop?”

One such trailblazer is Noleen Williams, EMEIA Markets Strategy Manager whose journey to the TechMBA is deeply personal and I believe, profoundly inspirational. Says Noleen; “when I was 22, I suffered a brain tumour and wrote in my journal back then that I will have my degree by 35 as I needed to stop my studies to focus on my health. When the MBA launched, I was very excited that this opportunity had now become available. I had already been pursuing the EY Badges when Power BI and the passion I have for data started my learning journey.”

Another is Morné Du Toit, an Assistant Manager in our EY Consulting practice shared why he chose to pursue the TechMBA. “I wanted to develop my future-focussed skills and to embrace the new ways of working in the digital age. On my journey, I’ve learnt that I am capable of anything I put my mind to and the newly found skills have given me confidence and excitement for future challenges in solving our clients’ problems. Together with the Next Wave strategy that we’ve recently adopted, the TechMBA is a catalyst for my career now and in the future.”

The leadership team and I are so excited that we can provide this opportunity to our EY teams. My friend and colleague, Roderick Wolfenden, EY Africa Markets Leader noted that the dramatic rise of the importance and integration of technology, particularly evident during the months of lockdown, means the MBA has launched at the right time. He notes that just about every business is now in some way also a technology business, thus, successful businesses rely heavily on technology for communication, productivity and keeping up with advancements in industry.

This is reiterated by Abeeb Moshood, a Senior Manager in Audit, another of our Africa TechMBA qualifiers. He says, “EY is building a better working world for everyone. With technology pervading how traditional businesses function, the technology industry’s appetite for TechMBA graduates has increased tremendously. One of the key benefits of the EY TechMBA is that it will improve my theoretical and practical knowledge of how businesses operate, improve leadership and people management skills, network or partnerships, and promote and maintain the company’s positive image. I’m really prepared to make the most of this opportunity.”

These are challenging times for people all over the globe and so it is reassuring that I am part of an organisation so dedicated to helping people acquire specialist knowledge that they can apply almost immediately into the workplace to help problem solve and develop solutions.
