Foreword: What’s Next?

Summary

France continues to be attractive for foreign manufacturers...

  • At the end of 2018, France was still the leader in Europe for manufacturing sites established or expanded by foreign investors (339). This placed France ahead of Turkey (203) and Germany (152), while the UK’s manufacturing FDI dropped by 35%.
  • This somewhat surprising finding stems first of all from the competitiveness of French global companies in aerospace, shipbuilding and the agri-food industries, for example.
  • Availability of skilled labour, the high-quality of existing infrastructure and a dedicated focus on manufacturing by public stakeholders led to the creation of 68 new production sites in 2018.
  • Foreign executives expressed their confidence in the prospects for France’s manufacturing: nearly 70% of them see a future in an industry "made in France" or "made by France".
