Steirerfleisch Gesellschaft m.b.H.
Entrepreneurs Karoline Scheucher and her husband, Alois Strohmeier, took over the family business in 2002. Steirerfleisch started as a small slaughterhouse founded by Karoline’s father in 1966. It’s now one of the largest pork processing companies in Austria.
Karoline and Alois have grown the business by modernizing the facilities and expanding by acquisition. In 2012, they bought their biggest competitor, Jobstl, taking on an additional 300 employees. Today, the company exports to North America and Asia and in 2017 had a turnover of US$369m.
High ethical and environmental standards are integral to the processes at Steirerfleisch. Each plant has two animal welfare officers on site, and all employees involved in slaughtering are trained in animal welfare. Such an approach is important to Karoline, who believes that “success is when the customer likes to come back, and quality is when you would give it to your children.”
