Eighteen years ago, Hans-Petter Mellerud left a stable job at Accenture to strike out on his own. The former Norwegian Special Forces Officer saw an opportunity in outsourcing payroll services and founded the human resources firm, Zalaris, in 2000. Today the company employs 820 people and has an estimated turnover of US$101m. Zalaris helps its clients to focus on their core business by supporting such human resource areas as payroll processing, accounting and recruitment. With headquarters in Oslo, it delivers services to more than 1 million employees across Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

Since the company started, technology and users’ needs have changed dramatically. Hans-Petter says being innovative has been crucial to success, and Zalaris now offers web-enabled portals and a mobile app, which lets users register time off, view pay slips and submit travel expenses on their tablet or smartphone.

Hans-Petter remains ambitious for Zalaris. “Everything is possible, even the impossible. It might take a bit longer to get there,” he says.
