Looking ahead to the May launch events of the London and Scotland 2017 Accelerate programmes, we asked Accelerate alumnus Ed Cox about his experience and his advice for other entrepreneurs.
“Reason Digital is a company that uses digital design, strategy and development to help others tackle social issues. We are about giving charities, social enterprises and organisations that have a social impact the skills they need to use digital tools to make a bigger impact. We wanted to help organisations deliver their services in a new way and at scale to more people. It’s become more important now than ever, especially since austerity kicked in, governments changed and organisations are expected to do more with less.
One of the things I got out of Accelerate was pitching my ambitions higher than they originally were. I had a fixed view on where I wanted the organisation to go, but being on Accelerate and talking to the experts at EY opened my eyes to some of the things we could do, or didn’t consider at the time. Another thing I got out of it was access to expertise and networks I didn’t have before. Getting assistance with finance and tax was really useful because they can be very complicated, and EY’s expertise was not the kind of thing we would have been able to afford.
My advice for other social entrepreneurs would be to get external help as quickly as possible. Don’t try and do everything yourself because you can’t know everything. It’s something I wish I had known earlier – to go out and meet more people and source expertise sooner.”
