Hasan – Our Future programme
Before I joined this programme I had some doubts if I would learn new things, and felt I would be shy and not introduce myself to new people, but the programme boosted my confidence and made me come out of my shell and I’m now comfortable speaking to anyone.
Before the programme, I would not have had the courage to speak publically, but during the induction; “the week of our future”, I had some opportunities to speak publically in front of new people who I hadn’t met before. But I believed in myself and thought this programme is for people like me to go out there and express my views. An example is on the marketing day, one team member in my group was not confident enough to talk about a product in front of the people, I thought to myself I am also a shy person but I can speak in front of these people. After the presentation I felt great as a lot people said that I did very well, this also motivated me and built confidence in me to know that I can speak in front of anybody. During this situation I used problem solving, communication and being a great team leader.
During the two weeks in the programme I worked with the maintenance department, the team play such an important role in the building to keep the employees safe and sound. The department really motivated me and said that 'I have big potential to be an engineer'. So I am pleased that I was placed in the maintenance department.
I have been accepted to do an electrical course and the work experience has really helped me a lot during the interview as I was able to talk about the skills I had learned during my time with my employer. I will be starting in September and the course will be for two years, after the two years if I get the best qualifications it will lead me into an apprenticeship. As most of the time I was in the workshop, I looked around the equipment and also did a lot of practical work which has inspired me to choose the path of becoming an electrician.
Hodan – Our Future programme
The reason why I wanted to take part in the Our Future programme is because teachers at my school often told me I wouldn’t pass any of my GCSEs. The Our Future programme was promoting something different to me and saying I could achieve anything I wanted. Being on the Our Future programme is the reason why I’ve been able to achieve so much education-wise.
Even the mentors and the people I’ve met have had their own struggles in their own lives. It’s been inspiring to be told don’t let it stop you and strive for more.
My career ambitions are either to go into criminal psychology or continue with what I do best, which is write songs or use spoken word. I hope in five years’ time I have completed university; I’ve got a degree and get into a field that’s musically based. And make lots of money!
