EY: Brexit Customs Union set to be major tech challenge for the civil service

Graeme Swan, Government and Public Sector partner at EY, comments on today’s Customs Union announcement:

Although great to see clearer guidance on post-Brexit customs policy, anything shorter than a four year delivery window could pose major risks on making this a reality.

“It’s already set to be a major tech challenge for the civil service as it is a hugely ambitious to have a single departmental IT project delivered in this timeframe. The planned Customs Union will need governmental departments to put aside traditional boundaries and to work as one.

“We now hope buying teams across the Civil Service are planning for major decisions such as finding the right software and technology partners, at the right price – and as always, value for money should be top of the agenda.

“Government also needs to consider whether to set up a ‘Brexit Delivery Unit’ to co-ordinate the technical implementation across Whitehall. This could have similar scope and powers, for example, as the Olympic Delivery Authority had in 2012.”
