Rebalancing the economy
EY’s Economics for Business programme supports the region’s changing economic landscape
Two decades of working alongside the UK’s fastest growing companies means we can help businesses accelerate growth
Where will your growth journey take you next?
Rebalancing the economy
Our Economics for Business programme supports the region’s changing economic landscape. Over the coming years, the political and economic structure of the South West and South Wales will change dramatically as the regions undergo fundamental change through devolution.
Our programme provides knowledge, analysis and insight to help businesses understand the economic environments they operate in, and plan accordingly. We work with both private and public sectors, facilitating the debate between business and government, supporting economic development, growth and regeneration.
EY’s Attractiveness Survey
Our Attractiveness Survey programme focuses on insights derived from understanding growth from a foreign direct investment (FDI) perspective into countries and regions across the globe.
Our 2018 survey finds the UK still Europe's number one foreign direct investment destination, ahead of Germany and France, despite a decline in sentiment from foreign investors towards the UK as a place to invest.
UK Attractiveness Survey special report: Bridging the gap
Our December 2018 special report shows the disparity of FDI flows into the UK, which are dominated by its largest cities and towns at the expense of the areas around them.
Rebalancing: UK region and city economic forecast 2018

Across the South West and South Wales with its vibrant, thriving entrepreneurial culture, the middle market in particular is having a significant impact on growth.
This success, however, also brings business leaders the daily challenges of securing growth capital, keeping abreast of the latest technology changes, perfecting internal management structures, and getting the right tools to expand.
Many middle market companies need to become more strategic in their planning and thinking, and in implementing tools such as data analytics and social media presence. These dynamic businesses are export orientated, and hungry for success and expansion – but they also need the right tools to help them succeed.
EY has been active in this market for a long time, and is in it for the long term. We have a long standing presence as a trusted advisor to mid-market businesses through our focus on entrepreneurship and fast-growth. We have strong links with businesses in the region through our Entrepreneur Of The Year awards programme, which in recent years has seen entrants from the South West and South Wales; Flybe Plc, St Austell Brewery, Opus Professional Services, and Smart Solutions.
In 2018, the programme celebrates its 20th anniversary, giving us two decades of experience working alongside the UK’s fastest growing companies, and understanding how to help high-growth entrepreneurship leaders accelerate growth. Sponsorships and events
Innovation South West Digital Conference
We recently worked with Business West to deliver ‘Innovation South West’ which brought together leaders from business and academia to explore practical ways that digital and technological advancement can be used to gain competitive advantage and avoid risk.
Speakers included Ash Ali, architect of Just Eat’s record breaking £1.5bn tech IPO, and EY’s Chief Innovation Officer, Harry Gaskell. The audience had the opportunity to break into smaller “solution circles”, each led by a subject matter expert who delivered practical advice on topics including behavioural science, intelligent automation, data sharing and predictive analytics, Internet of Things, fintech and digital selling.
Watch a short video of this first class event on 14 June 2018.
EY is proud to sponsor this year’s annual Tech Nation report and 11-city tour. This year the report found that the tech sector is worth nearly £184bn to the UK economy, up from £170bn in 2016. Find out how the South West and Wales are performing in tech.

Gromit Unleashed 2
We are proud to be a sponsor of this year’s Gromit Unleashed 2 trail, the third of its kind in Bristol. The trail includes 67 giant sculptures across the city to raise money for The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity. EY is sponsoring a Feathers McGraw sculpture painted by local artist Emily Ketteringham which can be found outside the Wills Memorial Building.
Andrew Perkins, Managing Partner at EY in Bristol, says: “At EY, we’re passionate about supporting the local community, so we’re thrilled to be involved in this fantastic local charity initiative for a second time. The Bristol Children’s Hospital plays a phenomenal role in the community helping sick children and their families across the South West region and beyond. It’s great to see local businesses and the Bristol community coming together to support a local charity, and we’re proud to be part of that.”
