EY - Innovation and health care transformation

Health care innovators and change agents are addressing challenges within their own organizations, across the continuum of care, and at the state and national levels. Like a plant pushing out from a rock, the health care industry is being asked to overcome inertia, break through the status quo and dynamically create the future of health care.

In our 2013 edition of New horizons, we explore innovation from a variety of perspectives.

  • Spurring industry improvement through government initiatives
  • Finding efficiencies in care delivery
  • Bringing excellence to scale in patient care
  • Driving a data revolution with information technology
  • Safeguarding integrity through compliance and ethics
  • Integrating for mutual gain
  • Mitigating shortages and maximizing resources in the workforce
  • Using data and learning from variation

Although innovation has been the hallmark of biomedical science in the US, our system for delivering and paying for care has not kept pace. The industry's next horizon calls for innovative approaches to achieve the triple aim: better care, better health, lower costs.

From the perspective of many industry observers, the Affordable Care Act — now in its fourth year of implementation — is a catalyst for innovation.

Through delivery system reforms such as accountable care organizations, valuebased purchasing and health insurance exchanges, the law’s provisions are intended to help health care organizations renew their patient-centered focus — and fundamentally change their business models to thrive in the new horizon of care delivery.
