The Accountancy Workforce Review Committee (AWRC) has released a report, outlining key strategies to strengthen the attractiveness of the accountancy sector and grow Singapore’s pool of skilled accounting professionals to meet industry needs. One of the key strategies is to ensure good careers by reviewing compensation structures, redesigning accountancy jobs and providing opportunities for skills development and career growth.

Mr. Liew Nam Soon, Singapore Country Managing Partner at Ernst & Young LLP and EY Asean Regional Managing Partner says:

“EY is committed to support and align with the recommendations by the AWRC. This announcement is timely and a positive move in the right direction. The recommendations bode well for the overall attractiveness of the accounting profession, the ability to attract quality talents to the sector, and by extension, drive enhanced value that accounting professionals can bring to businesses.

“The report also spotlights the long-term value and importance of the accounting profession, as the business landscape becomes increasingly complex. The accounting profession plays an enduring role in helping to build trust and confidence in capital markets and businesses, and contributing to the talent pipeline for industries. It is therefore important that accounting professionals are continually equipped to develop future-ready skills, and rewarded fairly and competitively.”

Investing in holistic career experiences

To create holistic career experiences, EY has been investing more than ever in combining advanced technology with technical excellence, as well as driving skills development and learning, underpinned by a strong purpose and supportive flexible work culture. These include, among others:

  • EY people work with teams across sectors and geographies. For those who wish to gain international exposure, there are various short- to long-term mobility programs to help them develop a global mindset, as well as the knowledge and experience of working in other countries. There are also opportunities to switch paths to other service lines where they apply accounting knowledge to solve business problems.

Flexible work culture:

  • EY has introduced a flexible work arrangement for more than a decade – way before flexible working was normalized.

  • The EY purpose of building a better working world resonates with the younger generation. We run an active corporate responsibility program, EY Ripples, where EY people apply their skills, knowledge and experience to help address socioeconomic challenges, and are entitled to annual volunteer leave to enable them to give back to the community.
