Serbia

Dejan Papić, Owner, Laguna Ltd.

Dejan Papić was a computer programmer when he read Terry Pratchett’s The Color of Magic. He enjoyed it so much that he translated it into Serbian for his wife and friends. Realizing there could be a larger audience for the book, Dejan founded Laguna Publishing in 1998 so he could bring the title to the rest of Serbia.

Today, Laguna is the country’s largest domestic publisher and employs more than 500 people. The company publishes 350 titles annually, has 42 bookstores within the country, and was recently shortlisted at the London Book Fair for best publisher in the world.

Laguna continues to promote reading across the country, and its Laguna Readers Club has over 600,000 members who enjoy discounts and regularly visit the company’s DELFI retail chain.

Dejan is proud of his accomplishments and his ability to transform Serbia and the region from a publishing backwater into a thriving sector. Serbia is now one of the rare countries in the world where new bookstores are being opened and very few closed.
