Eligibility criteria

The competition is open to:
  • Malaysian undergraduate and post-graduate students, studying in local or foreign universities or colleges;
  • Malaysian full-time students pursuing professional qualifications as at 31 March 2024
  • Malaysian students / Graduates who have not commenced full-time employment as at 31 March 2024

EY YTPY international final

The international competition will kick-off with a series of exciting activities that consist of virtual learning and networking sessions. Country winners will have the opportunity to interact with people from other cultures and backgrounds and participate in group challenges. Participants will also be challenged with case studies to be presented to highly experienced judges, where the top ten finalists will be selected.

The top ten finalists will have the opportunity to compete in an in-person final event. The final event will take place across three days, consisting of networking, group activities and presentations. After a final review of the performance throughout the competition, the top three winners of the EY Young Tax Professional of the Year 2024 will be announced at an award ceremony.

 EY YTPY Malaysia FAQs

  • What is the EY Young Tax Professional of the Year (YTPY) about?

    The EY YTPY programme was created to reward and encourage the next generation of tax professionals. Students and early career professionals from around the world will compete for the EY YTPY title.

     

  • What is the difference between the local and international competitions?

    Participants in each country compete for the country’s national EY YTPY title. Each country winner is then eligible to join other country winners at the international competition to compete for the international EY YTPY title.

  • When did the program start?

    The EY YTPY program started in 2011 with nine countries. It has since grown to involve over 60 countries. The program was launched in Malaysia in 2013.

  • Why was the program established?

    The answer, quite simply, is that young talents matter: they are the next generation of tax professionals, a profession that is growing in strategic importance.

    The EY YTPY is an innovative program that seeks to reward and encourage the next generation of tax professionals.

    The award honors the contributions of promising students and graduates, and serves to:

    ►    Reaffirm the growing importance of tax knowledge in the world of business and finance among university students and graduates

    ►    Promote the emergence of young talented professionals in the field of tax, thus fostering interest for the tax profession and a future career in this field

    ►    Demonstrate to business leaders, the tax profession and tax administrations globally that investment in future tax talent is essential

  • How are the winners selected?

    Participants in the EY YTPY competition will be challenged with case studies and interviews before the judges who will be looking for evidence of creative and analytical strengths, as well as practical skills, inclusive leadership behavior and personality. The panel of judges will then confirm the top three winners of the EY Young Tax Professional of the Year.

  • Who is on the judging panel? How do you ensure the judging process is unbiased?

    The judging panel will include partners of the EY Tax Services, and influential members of the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board. Judges are rotated from year to year, to ensure fresh thinking and enthusiasm in the judging process.
