Dr Saw Khay Yong is a consultant orthopedic surgeon and the CEO of the Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC). With the vision of providing better treatment for articular cartilage injury in the knee joint, Dr Saw pioneered an innovative application of stem cells for this problem and set up KLSMC Stem Cells (Bionexus status) to spearhead research and development in this field. The results of this cutting-edge technology have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and presented in lectures worldwide.

This US-patented technology (US8377432B2) in chondrogenesis has been recognized by numerous scientific and entrepreneurial awards with the latest being the 1-Innocert Category Winner and the Most Innovative Biotech Company 2014 awards and the Top 10 Companies of the Enterprise 50 Award 2014.

With the continual support of the Malaysian Government and Biotech-Corp, KLSMC Stem Cells is embarking on an approved US-FDA phase IIb clinical trial with the Andrews Research Institute (USA), where KLSMC Stem Cells is the principal investigator. This phase will lead towards global acceptance of this new-found technology. This Malaysian biotechnology innovation has taken the medical world by surprise and placed Malaysia on the world map, attracting clinicians in search of knowledge and international patients seeking surgical treatment.
