EY Netherlands Partner Climate Change & Sustainability Services and Non-financial Information Lead

Connects people. Empathetic. Innovative. Does not like the status quo and wants to improve things together, because sustainability = innovation.

Tom Emmelkamp helps organizations with all their sustainability issues: from strategy to the reporting of non-financial information.

He studied business administration at the University of Groningen and has worked at EY since 2008. Also regularly provides training on sustainability and integrated reporting to clients and trade associations.

“Our work is still somewhat like missionary work. Many organizations want to ‘do something with sustainability,’ but then it turns out they are only interested in ‘being green’ –  reducing the CO2 footprint, for example. That's a good start, but the theme is much broader. It also includes the sustainable employability of personnel, safety and integrity, among other things. Our goal? To see sustainability fully embedded in the overall strategy and that an organization works toward long-term value creation based on a sustainable business model. It's not just about financial value, but also about social value and reducing negative environmental impact. The sum below the bottom line has to be positive.”

How Tom is building a better working world

“Clients often come to us with a reporting question but, as time goes by, in-depth discussions take place, which makes an organization look at sustainability in a different, more strategic way. I like to see that change of perspective develop. Moreover, you notice that investors, banks and other stakeholders attach increasing value to non-financial information. By helping companies report this information reliably and comprehensively, we contribute to a sustainable society.”
