Hooi Lam Chan has over 25 years of experience in providing assurance and consulting services, particularly to the financial services industry. He is the Malaysia Financial Services Assurance Leader and the Malaysia Financial Accounting Advisory Services (FAAS) Leader of Ernst & Young.
Hooi Lam is experienced in leading audits and specialized advisory work for large banking groups, investment banks, mortgage corporations, building societies, asset management companies, pension funds, integrated exchanges and insurance deposit corporations.
He advises clients in Malaysia and the region on appropriate accounting treatments for various exercises, including those involving issuance of financial instruments, structured financing, securitization, hedge accounting, impairment assessments, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory capital instruments, synthetic instruments and embedded derivatives, under conventional and Islamic principles.
Hooi Lam also assists clients with Malaysian Financial Reporting Standard (MFRS) and International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) conversions and implementations.

“I frequently speak at seminars, conferences and training programs in Malaysia and the region, to share my knowledge and experience.
I currently serve as a Board member of the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board (MASB) and am the project manager for the MASB Working Group on Financial Instruments, responsible for reviewing and undertaking a detailed study of the project and its significance to the accounting profession.
I am also an examiner for local professional qualification examinations and an adjudicator for the National Annual Corporate Report Awards (NACRA).”
