Zal is a Principal in the EY Financial Services sector and a state and local tax advisor to asset managers, private funds, trading firms, banks, broker-dealers and insurers. He leads state and local tax controversy services for the sector.

Zal counsels clients on multistate tax planning and structuring, and represents them before tax authorities. His background includes financial intermediation, as well as lending, private equity, liquid trading and investment management services.

He helps clients navigate New York State and City tax issues. He was previously a member of the New York City Department of Finance, where he was responsible for legislation, regulations, guidance and audits, and collaboration with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

Zal earned a BA from Vanderbilt University, a JD from the George Washington University Law School and an LLM in taxation from the New York University Law School.

How Zal is building a better working world

Zal recognizes that our clients have complex businesses with many different tax, financial and commercial pressure points. He works closely with them to structure and operate their businesses, and position themselves for the state tax implications of their activities. By doing this, he seeks to understand their operations, collaborate for the long term, and assemble the teams and experts they need.
