I always come home more full of energy than when I set out. At EY, you’re operating at the highest standard, with extremely clever people and leading international clients.

Derk-Jan van der Wal

EY Netherlands Partner Consulting

Connects people. Results-oriented. Innovative. He is sometimes less focused than he would like to be, because he gets pleasure out of too many things.

Derk-Jan van der Wal advises CFOs in the fields of digitalization, financial planning and analysis, with a special focus on Consumer Products & Agriculture.

He studied Business Administration at Nyenrode Business University, and gained his CA title at the University of Amsterdam. He has been working at EY since 2010, having previously worked as a management consultant at another leading consultancy organization.

“You can make a real impact by making connections. I truly believe in that. Are you making unconnected financial orders? That doesn’t make sense anymore. Financial issues are never self-contained. For example, the budgeting process is inextricably linked to a sales forecast. You always have to make the connections to other areas, like Sales, Operations, IT or Legal. Changing behavior is essential too. You may well want to change something, but how do you make it stick? It’s only by taking an organization-wide view and persevering that you can get real, relevant results. Especially in the long term.”

How Derk-Jan is building a better working world

“I always come home more full of energy than when I set out. At EY, you’re operating at the highest standard, with leading international clients and extremely clever people. Colleagues who are really ready to go the extra mile. So, yes, I’m pleased with that. But I’m also satisfied with the sectors I work in. Both fields are extremely tangible and in flux. A lot of disruption is going on in Consumer Products right now, while the question in Agriculture is: how can we reduce our ecological footprint? All of that requires innovation and entrepreneurship. It’s very inspiring.”
