The new Green Transition Award has been introduced to recognize companies that take responsibility for their climate impact. The finalists were Maersk, Arla and Royal Greenland.
Between inspiring presentations and fiery debates, winners of this year's awards were announced when Sustainability Awards was held on 14 September by Dansk Erhverv and EY in the Børssalen, which was crammed to overflowing.
This year, a new award has been introduced - the Green Transition Award. The winner was chosen by an independent jury who have assessed nine nominated companies based on various criteria. Of the nine nominees, three finalists were chosen:
- Maersk
- Arla
- Royal Greenland
And it was Maersk which took the prize.
The Green Transition Award is targeted at companies that, through their business model, have a significant climate and environmental impact, says Jan C. Olsen, CEO of EY in Denmark.
“With this award, we want to reward companies that take responsibility and contribute to the green transition by transforming their business into solutions that show significant results. The independent jury found that Maersk is a good example of that.”
Among other factors, the jury justified the selection of Maersk based on the fact that they have set a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. They are leading the way and serving as role models in an industry that contributes significantly to global emissions. Moreover, they are achieving this goal in a way that attracts customers, partners, and competitors to join their efforts.
”The winner has redefined the entire business and shows commitment in global regulation. They have invested in the greener path even before the market was fully ready for it. They underline how much there is to do in their industry, and theory is followed by action. When we are dealing with a company of this calibre and global presence, it creates perspectives we only dare dream of, says Brian Mikkelsen, CEO of Dansk Erhverv.
Morten Bo Christiansen, Head of Energy Transition, Maersk, says:
“We are honoured to receive the Green Transition Award on the same day that the world’s first methanol-enabled container vessel Laura joins our fleet. This vessel is the result of strong collaboration with partners in our industry, from suppliers to customers, and we are pleased that many more are on the order books for other carriers in addition to Maersk.”
