We are proud to announce that Partner Makiko Kawamura has joined EY TAX (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Managing Partner Kazuhiro Ebina) as of 1 April 2021. A lawyer and certified tax accountant, Ms. Kawamura has taken on various international tax cases in those capacities and also has extensive experience in cross-border transactions.
Ms. Kawamura is well-versed in the many facets of cross-border M&A, joint ventures, corporate restructuring and real estate transactions and has extensive experience providing tax advice regarding such transactions. Ms. Kawamura is an expert in providing advice on supply chain restructuring and related regulatory advisory and planning for consumption tax and tariffs in conjunction to cross-border transactions. In addition, Ms. Kawamura has a wealth of practical experience in negotiating with regulatory authorities and conducting dispute resolution in relation to tax audits, post clearance audits and other engagements, providing clients with services addressing both tax and legal issues.
Furthermore, Ms. Kawamura is an accomplished professional in the field of tax law and has been recognized in a number of legal rankings, including under the title of Best Lawyer in the 10th edition of The Best Lawyers in Japan.
Ms. Kawamura became a registered attorney in 2004, after receiving her master's degree from the Waseda University Faculty of Law in 2003. After obtaining an LLM at New York University School of Law in 2008, since 2014, Ms. Kawamura has provided services as a partner in the tax practice of an international law firm. Ms. Kawamura is registered under the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association and Tokyo Certified Public Tax Accountants’ Association, and also is qualified as a certified public tax accountant.
