EY Attractiveness Survey Romania 2021 | How can we seize opportunity in times of uncertainty?

2nd edition | 16 June 2021 |10:00 AM (EEST)

Foreign Direct Investments have been one of the most important drivers of economic growth for the past decades. Last year, FDI suffered the biggest possible drawback: a global pandemic emerged, generating dissruptions, recession and substantial decline of investments.

Nevertheless, history has proven that challenging times can become the perfect opportunity for change. In an uncertain context, governments and companies are putting digital transformation, innovation and sustainability on top of the agenda, while strategies, behaviours and policies are reconsidered, along with a reshaped post-pandemic vision of the world.

Romania has access to appropriate instruments of growth and transformation, such as the Recovery and Resilience Facility, tackling pressing issues such as education, digitalization and clean energy. To remain attractive in a reframed business environment, Romania must act decisively and embrace reform, innovation and collaboration at all levels.

At its second edition, the Romania Attractiveness Survey will offer crucial findings on Romania’s FDI performance, as well as the latest investor sentiments on relevant topics for our country. The launch event represents the platform through which will share for the first time these up-to-date and powerful FDI insights, as well as a dialogue opportunity for top-level executives and high-ranking representatives from Romanian.

Agenda DAY 1 - 16 June 2021

  • Moderator: Bogdan Ion, Country Managing Partner Romania & Moldova Chief Operating Officer - Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe & Central Asia

In 2020, the emergence of the pandemic took a toll on businesses and economies across the globe. In Romania, the effects of the economic recession have mitigated through various policies and stimulus. But the question of foreign investments, key driver of economic growth, remains uncertain, in a volatile global business environment.

The results of EY Romania Attractiveness Survey will offer relevant insights on our country’s performance in terms of FDI, as well as future perspectives from investors in terms of improving our country’s attractiveness.

  • Moderator: Gus Schellekens, Senior Advisor, EY Climate Change & Sustainability Services

Sustainability has become a dominant topic for governments and business altogether, which have worked collectively in developing and refining the concept. The pandemic has had made impact on this concept too, accelerating certain trends, including more attention to corporate behavior and acknowledging the impact companies have on the environment.

Global leaders have taken notice of the importance of climate action: EU countries will pursue the transition towards a low-carbon economy by 2050. The orientation of economic activities towards sustainable development is crucial. Companies and governments affirm the need to accelerate their fight against climate change.

Agenda DAY 2 - 17 June 2021

  • Moderator: Cristian Cârstoiu, Partner, Digital Enablement and Chief Innovation Officer, EY Romania

How can Romania’s cities become regional centers of foreign investment?

Smart cities are changing the way residents engage with city services and move through public space. Through technology, we have a new way of experiencing cities, with an increased efficiency of city operations and services and easy communication with citizens.  So how can we develop a more connected world, benefitting all stakeholders and improving the overall quality of life for urban residents?

Digital inclusion, mobility, innovation and creativity are among the aspects addressed in the transformation process of Romania’s cities.  A connected, intelligent and innovative Romanian city has the chance to attract large investors and possibly become a regional FDI center in Eastern Europe.

  • Moderator: Carmen Adamescu,  EY Romania & Moldova Consulting Partner, EY Romania & Moldova Technology Leader

How can we explore Romania’s strengths to power the future?

The pandemic has highlighted both the weaknesses and the strengths of our economy: a pre-existing health crisis, but also the resilience of the business sector, among others. Our survey illustrates what foreign investors see as important areas of potential for Romania, as well as issues that need to be tackled in 2021 and in the coming years.

How can Romania transform these insights into actionable plans? Recovery and Resilience Facility is one of the instruments of growth and transformation that Romania has access to, focused on issues such as education, digitalization and clean energy. The conversation will tackle infrastructure development, reform, innovation and collaboration for the future of Romania and its FDI attractiveness in a reframed business environment.
