The alarm clock. Rushing. Noise. People running all over the place. Breakfast. Mobile phones. Reggaeton. TikTok. Ruckus. Neighbourhood. School. Bell. Home time. Raval. Hubbub.
Terral. Silence. Break. Calm. Order. Study.
Nour is eight years old and lives in the Raval neighbourhood in Barcelona. Her daily life, and that of many of her friends, is a mix of hubbub and silence, chaos and order, rushing and calm. Their lives are full of contradictions but they are lucky to share a special place, Terral, an after-school refuge, a place to pause while others are still hard at it.
A place to make a family away from home, move forward, take charge, dream big and draw a breath.
There they meet up daily with Tauba and Princess Chloe, and between chores, drama workshops and music classes, they have even found time to record their own podcast.
“Del Raval al mundo” is a war cry. It is their way of raising their voice to say loud and clear loud that they are going to make their dreams come true.
1, 2, 3… testing, testing, you’re on air!
In their podcast, they talk about what they want to be when they grow up: doctors, football players, teachers, volunteers, policewomen. They’ll need nine lives to do everything they have their sights on. Do their dreams have a limit? Not at all. For these girls, the sky is the limit. As Princess Chloe says: “you just need to believe very firmly”.
The mikes and lights are turned off in Terral. Another day draws to an end and they head off to their other homes. It is time to fly but never to stop dreaming.
