EY Japan Integrated Report 2023

Community

We are focusing on supporting the next generation workforce, working with impact entrepreneurs, and accelerating environmental sustainability.

The Japanese government announced its policy direction for regional revitalization in 2014, and the World Economic Forum (WEF) released Stakeholder Capitalism Metrics in 2020.

Through EY Ripples established in 2018, we have built a framework to revitalize local communities by drawing on our people’s professional skills and experience to help solve social issues. Meanwhile, our efforts include supporting the training of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) talent and certified public accountants, promoting DE&I(Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness) , as well as providing career opportunities through the EY Tech MBA and EY Badges programs. Ongoing initiatives to develop the next generation of Japan’s business leaders include programs such as EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™*¹, EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women™ *², Women Athletes Business Network*³,and EY Accelerator Program.

EY Ripples

EY Ripples is our global corporate responsibility (CR) program. EY Ripples has three areas of focus: Supporting the next generation workforce; Working with impact entrepreneurs; Accelerating environmental sustainability.

Our goal is to contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015, as well as positively impacting people’s lives around the world. We strive to create new value by leveraging the knowledge, skills and experience of our professionals. EY Ripples offers exciting new ways to do this as it brings together the global EY network in an effort to achieve one shared vision: to positively impact one billion lives by 2030.

Our initiatives in action

Supporting the next generation workforce

By leveraging our experience as a firm which cultivates globally active leaders, we are providing the next generation workforce of children and young adults, as well as people who have not received a full education, with opportunities to acquire the skills and mindset necessary to lead and work in meaningful roles in an era of rapid technological and social change. This includes providing accounting and career education courses for junior high and high school students, and design thinking sessions and endowed courses for university students.

Working with impact entrepreneurs

Impact entrepreneurs advance activities that develop better solutions to global issues and contribute to achieving SDGs. We help these entrepreneurs to have a greater impact on business and society through mentoring, education sessions on business-related themes, and accelerator programs that provide support to expand their networks.

Accelerating environmental sustainability

Through our EY Ripples program, we are supporting activities that deepen understanding of sustainability and new business models that balance economic activity with efforts to conserve and repair the environment. Our scope is expanding every year and includes providing support to entrepreneurs who are tackling major environmental issues, providing workshops to raise the environmental literacy of younger generations, and contributing to ecosystem research projects in which EY people participate as citizen scientists.

*1 EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™
EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ is an international entrepreneur award program founded by EY in 1986 to help produce entrepreneurs who can take on the challenge of new business domains. We support the next generation of entrepreneurs by helping them expand their business globally and build networks and communities. The program is currently held in more than 60 countries and recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious business awards.

*2 EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women™
EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women™ was launched in the U.S. in 2008 as a program to support women founders who have built profitable small companies, but have not yet found the essential tools needed to scale sustainably and gain a worldwide presence. The program has built a network spanning 55 countries with over 800 women founders. In Japan, the program has been run since 2013, and it offers women founders who are looking to scale their businesses access to the knowledge, experience, and various networks that EY has built over many years.

*3 Women Athletes Business Network (WABN)
EY believes that women athletes can transfer their accomplishments in sport to the business world. By focusing on the skills acquired through sport WABN Academy learning sessions, networking, and mentoring by business leaders, the goal is to help them develop an entrepreneurial mindset and gain basic business skills such as accounting knowledge. The purpose of WABN is to unlock the leadership potential of women and provide guidance on their transition from sport to business.
