In addition to the decarbonisation potential of green hydrogen, which is something the public has come to understand better now, there has been increased emphasis in recent months on the advantages of green hydrogen in the context of energy security and independence. The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the related shock to the energy market emphasised the advantages of green hydrogen as an energy carrier that may be generated in the European Union (EU) without fossil fuels imported from outside the Community.
However, there are also many sceptics who question the potential of green hydrogen. They refer to it as a “passing phase” that fails to consider the technical and infrastructural challenges, pointing to the narrow spectrum of possible applications of green hydrogen and warning against “blowing up another speculative bubble”.
We are convinced that the public needs reliable information about the current state of development of the hydrogen economy and its potential in the foreseeable future. We are aware that our report does not exhaust all the issues connected with the subject, but we believe that it will be a comprehensible description of the current advancement of the hydrogen economy and the expected paths for its expansion.
