Green hydrogen – a revolution or a passing phase? Opportunities and challenges for the Polish economy

Green hydrogen has recently become a central part of discussions dealing with the future of the Polish and European energy industry – we keep hearing endless debates of experts and announcements of politicians who tell us about the plans for the widespread use of green hydrogen.

In addition to the decarbonisation potential of green hydrogen, which is something the public has come to understand better now, there has been increased emphasis in recent months on the advantages of green hydrogen in the context of energy security and independence. The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the related shock to the energy market emphasised the advantages of green hydrogen as an energy carrier that may be generated in the European Union (EU) without fossil fuels imported from outside the Community.

However, there are also many sceptics who question the potential of green hydrogen. They refer to it as a “passing phase” that fails to consider the technical and infrastructural challenges, pointing to the narrow spectrum of possible applications of green hydrogen and warning against “blowing up another speculative bubble”.

We are convinced that the public needs reliable information about the current state of development of the hydrogen economy and its potential in the foreseeable future. We are aware that our report does not exhaust all the issues connected with the subject, but we believe that it will be a comprehensible description of the current advancement of the hydrogen economy and the expected paths for its expansion.

Summary

The implementation of hydrogen technologies in the European Union presents a tremendous opportunity to replace traditional energy resources with a new and modern source of energy. Widely adopting such solutions will facilitate the decarbonization of industries and the modernization of heating systems. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, we should primarily view hydrogen technologies through the lens of the benefits they bring. We invite you to explore the report prepared by EY and Hynfra P.S.A.: " Green hydrogen – a revolution or a passing phase? Opportunities and challenges for the Polish economy," which provides insights into hydrogen technologies and discusses their intricacies.
