The new F-Gas Regulation (EU) 573/2024 has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union and is in force from March,11 2024.

The new Regulation introduces new restrictions for the use of hydrofluorocarbons (“HFC”) and establishes the total elimination of them by 2050.

The substances that are subject to F-Gas Regulation can be imported/exported (as such or within an equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning equipment, heat pumps, personal care products) provided if the importer/exporter is registered in the F-gas portal and have allocated quota. The quotas allocated by the Commission for HFCs will be gradually reduced.

We remind you that the registration is made through F-gas Portal of the European Commission, a centralized online platform to implement the HFC quota, manage the requirements of imports and exports, and facilitate the reporting obligations.  The requirements for registration in the F-gas Portal are mentioned in the Implementing Regulation (EU) 661/2019.

What does this mean for you?

Companies involved in imports/exports of products likely to contain HFC should analyze the new F-gas Regulation and review their strategies to understand the full implications of Regulation (EU) 573/2024 on their operations, to be able to continue the current activity.
