Jamie Beaton learned early that ambition alone does not open doors; students also need the right information, guidance and networks. While still at school, he recognised that a student’s prospects were often shaped less by ability than by access. Rather than accepting those barriers, he set out to build a business that could connect ambitious young people with opportunities that had previously seemed beyond reach.
Co-founding Crimson Education in New Zealand in 2013, Jamie began by helping students navigate competitive university admissions. Over time, he expanded that original idea into a global education group spanning online schooling, tutoring, mentoring and academic enrichment. By combining technology with personalised support from educators and mentors around the world, Crimson has created new pathways for students regardless of where they live.
Building the business meant thinking globally from the outset. Jamie invested early in a distributed team, embraced remote collaboration before it became commonplace and continued to broaden the organisation as education evolved. Today, Crimson Education Group supports tens of thousands of families worldwide through a portfolio that includes Crimson Education, Crimson Global Academy, NumberWorks’nWords and Revision Village. Alongside commercial growth, Jamie established the Te Ara a Kupe Beaton Scholarship, which has provided educational support for Māori and Pasifika students pursuing international study opportunities.
Although Crimson has grown into one of New Zealand’s best-known education businesses, Jamie remains focused on the same question that inspired it more than a decade ago: how to ensure a student’s ambition is shaped by their potential rather than the limits of their circumstances.
