In perfumery, knowledge has traditionally been something to protect. Formulas are closely guarded, suppliers are often opaque and technical expertise is rarely shared freely. Jamie Frater saw an opportunity in doing the opposite. After spending a decade teaching himself the craft, he built Fraterworks on the belief that making knowledge more accessible would strengthen both his customers and his company.

Founded in 2022, Fraterworks gives independent perfumers and fragrance businesses access to high-quality materials, technical guidance and support that had long been difficult to obtain. Rather than operating as a traditional supplier, Jamie combined product expertise with transparency, educational resources and customer service, creating a business that has earned a global reputation largely through word of mouth. He has also developed Inscentify, a free platform that helps perfumers formulate safely and keep up with changing international regulations.

Jamie brought earlier entrepreneurial experience to the challenge, having built Listverse into one of the most-read trivia websites of its kind, reaching 30 million monthly readers before selling it. With Fraterworks, he has grown the business by as much as 370% per year, without paid marketing. The company now employs 65 people in Wellington, serves more than 20,000 customers worldwide and remains cashflow funded while expanding across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Jamie has also designed much of the company’s software infrastructure himself, helping a small New Zealand team operate with the capability of a much larger organisation.

For Jamie, sharing knowledge has never been a marketing tactic. It reflects the way he learned his own craft, and continues to shape how Fraterworks serves its customers, develops its people and builds a place for perfumery in New Zealand.
