Kristina, a Manager within the Community Impact team at EY in Melbourne joined through an acquisition and shares her insights on working for a global organisation.
What even is the EY organisation?
After a month away from my job at a Consulting practice, I turned on my phone.
I had been working in Nepal running professional development training for local teachers, and the last thing I expected upon my return to Australia was the flood of missed calls, texts and cryptically worded emails from my manager asking me to call as soon as possible.
Honestly, I was worried that I might have been fired. Instead, it was much worse – we had been acquired, and I was now working for some big corporate organisation I had never heard of; EY.
I did some Googling and was even more confused! How would my background in behavioural science, education and facilitation make sense in a company that seemed to be about tax and audit?
I can’t believe how wrong I was.
Working for EY
At EY, I was assigned to the Community Impact team. In this role, I have led projects designed to engage communities all over Australia, developed digital citizenship and safety skills, promoted disability and inclusive education, endorsed financial literacy education and delivered innovative health and safety training.
I have now learned that EY teams do much more than just dealing with numbers. EY’s commitment to building a better working world means that all employees are empowered to be transformative leaders, ask big questions and identify even better approaches for clients, communities and stakeholders.
Through the EY Climate Change and Sustainability Services team, I have also come to appreciate the incredible power of the corporate space in shaping a sustainable future. I have been astounded by my teammates who contributed to developing leading climate policy, climate risk modelling and responsible investment advisory – work I didn’t even know was possible until I was a part of EY.
The endless opportunities and experiences
EY has turned out to be a blessing to both my professional and personal development. Working in this leading global organisation, I have been able to explore bigger, better and more creative approaches to problem-solving for clients and my team. I have also been able to challenge myself and develop my understanding of professional services, communication and management skills.
During my time at EY, I have been afforded opportunities to travel, relocate to Melbourne, work flexibly, learn AUSLAN, master cooking some pretty amazing gingerbread, improve my physical health, understand more about my mental health, and even conquer my fear of heights at Luna Park. The opportunities here are endless! I have developed meaningful relationships across the organisation and have been inspired by the people surrounding me more times than I can remember.
Unlike most of my colleagues, I did not choose to work at EY. However, every day that I show up, I choose to stay and be a part of this community. I make this choice because of the incredible people, opportunities and impact that is created here. At EY, I choose to create my success and impact our world, and I know I am supported every step of the way.
