People Stories

  • Emma Guignard

    Starting as a cadet

In 2007, Emma began her career as a cadet in Assurance. Her initial attraction to the company was the positive impression she had of the caring and interesting people she met during the application process. This initial impression has kept her with EY for a remarkable 17 years.

Emma holds a Bachelor of Business with a major in Accounting and sub-majors in Finance and Small Business Accounting. Recognising the importance of professional development, she decided to pursue the CA (Chartered Accountant) designation. For Emma, this designation was not just a career progression but also an opportunity to become a well-rounded professional with skills applicable to various roles.

During her time at EY, Emma has worn several hats, including spending a decade in Audit. She then transitioned to roles including Program Manager in the Assurance team, a stint with Ignite (EY's Innovation team), and serving as the FSO Learning Leader for two years. Emma even stepped in to cover parental leave for Consulting and Cross Service Line Learning Leaders, and served as an Assurance Learning Lead for one and a half years. Currently, she holds the position of Talent Development Operations Lead.

Emma believes that the CA designation equips professionals with foundational skills essential for any role. These skills include curiosity, analytical and problem-solving abilities, ethical and financial decision-making, leadership, teamwork, and market awareness. This designation has not only benefited her within EY but also enabled her to actively participate in boards and excel in her personal life.

  • Romain Auger-Ottavi

    Engineer turned Auditor

Meet Romain Auger-Ottavi, a Senior Manager in Audit, whose journey took him from engineering to accounting, all while pursuing his passion for outdoor adventures.

Romain's analytical mindset, coupled with his engineering acumen, was a perfect match for the complexities of accounting and his internship at EY. The work culture at EY, connections made during these years, and a desire to experience other countries, led Romain to a decision to move to Sydney in 2016 with EY.

To complete his unique skill set, Romain embarked on the journey to become a CPA knowing that it is important for his role on client engagements to have external accreditations in his field. The assessment process was simple and speaking to a CPA staff member as needed was easy.

Joining CPA Australia places Romain in a network of more than 168,000 members working in over 100 countries with access to networking events, and conferences and receiving daily updates on a variety of topics.

Romain's journey has been a tapestry of unexpected twists and exciting opportunities. From engineering marvels to balancing the books, from Paris to Sydney, from boardrooms to breaking waves – his story is a testament to the limitless possibilities that come from pursuing one's passions with dedication, embracing change and leveraging diverse skill sets.

  • Justin Polinelli

A photographic portrait of Justin Polinelli

After switching from pharmacy, Justin completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from Curtin University and commenced with EY Australia as a graduate in Assurance. Justin gravitated toward EY because of its strong reputation for fostering a culture of innovation and diversity. EY's commitment to professional development and its global presence aligned with Justin’s career goals, offering ample opportunities for growth and a chance to work on impactful projects across various industries.

A Chartered Accountant designation followed as Justin knew this would provide a solid foundation in accounting and open doors to diverse career opportunities in the profession.

This has proved valid as over time, Justin has been able to showcase his versatility working as an Audit Manager, Assurance Learning Manager, CA Program Manager and now as a Consulting Learning Manager. Justin also sits on the WA State Council for Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, demonstrating his commitment to the accounting profession and desire to contribute at both the state and national level.

His love for spreadsheets extends beyond the professional realm and he will look for any reason to create one. Whether it be for an upcoming holiday, tracking discounts or simply to plan his weekend activities including basketball tournaments, hiking trails and chilling with his pet dog and rabbit!

  • Matthieu Scuotto

    France to Australia

Meet Matthieu Scuotto, a Manager in Audit, who started his career in France completing two internships before joining full-time. An encounter while studying at university from EY was the deciding factor in Matthieu's applying to EY. Having spent most of his upbringing in Paris with a short study semester combined with an internship in New York, Matthieu made the move to Sydney in 2022. Working on an engagement during his internship and the sense of satisfaction was one of the main reasons why Matthieu decided to pursue audit.

Matthieu completed a master's degree in accounting, controlling, and audit in France. A colleague recommended the CPA experience-based pathway as an option as Matthieu had undertaken the French CPA diploma and this could be recognised locally with this external qualification. The CPA Australia designation provided recognition in the accounting and audit industry and for Matthieu provided a clear and broad pathway in his learning journey. Because of Matthieu's previous experience in France, he was granted exceptions along with his experience abroad assisting with the work experience requirement. Working on a variety of clients and industries along with collaborating with colleagues and clients are all things that Matthieu enjoys.
