Helping the Public Transport Company better understand their passengers

With the increasing population in major cities across the world, including Dublin, this Public Transport Company wanted to improve the quality of transport services available to the public and increase overall transport sustainability. EY helped the Public Transport Company begin their journey to realising these goals through the facilitation of a number of EY wavespace™ sessions focused on demonstrating the ‘Art of the Possible’ through the application of emerging technology.

EY initially brought together a senior management team from across the Public Transport Company in an EYwavespace session designed to explore how new technology could be applied to existing business challenges within the transport ecosystem. Utilising public transport data collected from multiple operators and emerging technologies such as machine learning and advanced analytics EY were able to show how passenger numbers at each stop on specific routes could be more effectively predicted. This would allow for better planning of overall passenger capacity at certain times during the day, at certain points along the bus route.

After the Public Transport Company's initial session in EY wavespace a number of further prototyping sessions have been conducted to further assess how this technology can be applied to other business challenges and implementation projects have been initiated for the original concepts demonstrated.

EY wavespace, and its associated technologies, have been integral to EY’s ability to present complex ideas to key stakeholders. Without this, it is unlikely that the projects would have proceeded beyond a proof of concept stage
