Hernán Garcés is a transformative figure in the cherry export industry, having cultivated Garces Fruit to become the largest cherry exporter in the world. Hernán’s passion for cherries was nurtured from a young age, playing among the orchard trees that his parents planted in 1965. Fascinated by the fruit's delicate nature and complexity, he planted his own cherry trees in 1978, embarking on a journey that would transform his childhood inspiration into a thriving enterprise.
Decades later, after he completed his education and decided to work for the family agricultural business, his relentless dedication and innovation drove him to grow Garces Fruit from 100 tons of cherries in 1996 to 64,000 tons by 2025.
Hernán, known as “the father of the Chilean cherry,” played a key role in opening the Chinese market for Chilean cherries in 2007, transforming the local industry. He shared his knowledge and helped cherries become Chile’s second most-exported product. Through investment in science and technology, Hernán improved cultivation and post-harvest processes to deliver top quality and timely transport.
Today, Garces Fruit, which also produces kiwis, nectarines, peaches and plums, markets over 18 million boxes of its products year-round. The company’s remarkable growth has provided direct employment to over 160,000 people, significantly impacting the Chilean economy.
