JOHANNESBURG, 23 March 2022 – EY's energy consultancy team is pleased to announce that we offer a full advisory service on EPCs and have been accredited to issue these certificates.
EPCs for buildings look like the certificates that you see on new appliances, and indicate the energy performance of a specific building, under the South African National Standard (SANS) 1544:2014.
EY has been accredited to issue these certificates by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS), which is the only national body responsible for carrying out accreditations in respect of energy conformity standards.
The buildings that will require an EPC are:
- Government buildings of more than 1000 sq metres,
- Privately-owned buildings of more than 2000 sq metres which house offices and entertainment facilities,
- Educational institution buildings, and
- Places of public assembly (like sport and community centres).
Shops and wholesalers’ stores are currently excluded from the regulation at this stage, but EPC certificates can still be voluntarily acquired for these businesses.
While the EPC certificate process does not oblige owners to improve the energy efficiency in buildings, there are still advantages in doing so.
A more energy-efficient building may attract higher rentals, and certified improvements could boost the value of the property, as an EPC provides official recognition of a building’s energy efficiency status.
EY assists building owners with advice on EPCs, and in obtaining the certificates.
