ndrita Maharaj is a lawyer, a mentor and someone who enjoys pushing the boundaries of her life. We asked her more about how her work as a mentor inspires her in her day to day life.

EY: Tell us more about your role at EY with key highlights in your time at the organisation.

Andrita: I am a lawyer, GCO, assisting the business with legal queries, drafting and reviewing contracts, negotiating and providing legal advice, opinions to the business in respect of various legal issues. In my role as an associate director, I must support my team members and not only with legal support. Sometimes they require encouragement and someone to reach out to, as much as we are professional individuals, we are human beings, we have difficult days for various reasons, whether it is feeling unwell, the loss of a loved one, feeling overwhelmed due to our heavy work load and so on. In my role as mentor I support my mentees similarly to how I would support and encourage my colleagues, which is by uplifting them.

My most recent achievements include being invited as an eminent speaker at the Gennext 2020 legal conference in Mumbai, India. I was also the winner of the Young Achiever of the Year (Legal Era) 2019  and Eminent speaker at the Legal Era Conference held at the Protea Hotel in Johannesburg in 2019. I was later interviewed live on television in respect of my contributions to the legal profession in 2019.

On weekends, I mentor LLB students at the University of Witwatersrand where I am a member University’s mentorship program. I mentor LLB students from year three of their studies by providing them with advice on the practical aspects of legal practice. I prepare them for interviews by conducting mock interviews with them and I provide the students with advice on how to dress for an interview. Most of the students come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and I offer support by encouraging them, checking up on them, assisting with study timetables, cv writing, cover letter writing and so on.

Personally, I love to try new experiences. I recently completed a two-hour obstacle course, which really took me out of my comfort zone and I overcame my fear of heights. I also enjoy water activities such as jet skiing.

EY: How do does being a mentor influence you in your life in general?

Andrita: Drawing from the experiences of others certainly assists me in being able to be a better listener and asking the right questions to offer the relevant support in the various roles that I have taken on, both professionally and personally.

The fulfilment of knowing that I am able to make a difference in the lives of others, not just in a professional sense brings me great joy. We all are fighting battles that others may not be aware of, thus for me it is extremely important to be kind and offer support where I can even if it is only by listening to, praying for and encouraging the individual.

Advice to my younger self: “Have more fun. Take time to enjoy being ‘young’ and care-free.”
