L
inda Motea was recently made EY Audit Partner and named Top 35 under 35. A combination of excellent work ethic and community passion are defining characteristics both professionally and personally.

EY: Tell us more about your roles and responsibilities both at EY and at the various organisations you serve.

Linda: I am a Partner responsible for the audit of financial institutions, building value for clients and managing relationships, development of our employees and growing the business. I lead the nutrition portfolio while serving on the board for DiskiNine9, a non-profit organisation that uses the game of soccer and netball to unite communities, educate the youth and drive skills development. My responsibilities at DiskiNine9 include liaising with sponsors, corporate partners and media to organise soccer and netball holiday school programmes that reach over 500 youths from the Soweto community. I ensure that the learners have nutritional meals daily throughout the annual programme. The learners need food for concentration during the tutorials and for energy to play the sports games. For some kids, that will be their only nutritional meal for the day.

I also enjoy MC-ing at various events as well as motivational speaking; developing and coaching the youth is very close to my heart.

EY: How do you think these various roles complement each other and inspire each other?

Linda: My MC role is developing my public speaking abilities and has enabled me to be confident when I deliver messages to clients and other platforms. My DiskiNine9 role has enabled me to take an interest in the development of the careers and personal lives of our trainees and mangers. It has driven me to take an active part in programs that drive such a mission such as the Siyakhula programme EY. This programme is a Diversity and Inclusiveness committee whose vision is to support and enable ACI professionals through mentorship, workshop and experiences.

The time I spend with the young people makes me understand the challenges they face and make me a lot relatable in a Professional sense. It also expands my perspective as I interact with diverse people who have various backgrounds. I can guide some of their thinking and share experiences.

The MC role boosts my confidence and sharpens me as a speaker. I can articulate myself a lot better in a professional sense. My professional role enables me to bring some sort of structure to my weekend roles and enables me to share experiences and learnings from my professional role. It also enables me to build and pass on networks and connections.

EY: How do they coalesce to make you a better professional or all-rounder, a better daughter, friend, community contributor?

Linda: The time I spend with the young people makes me understand the challenges they face and make me a lot relatable in a professional sense. It also expands my perspective as I interact with diverse people who have various backgrounds. I can guide some of their thinking and share experiences.

Advice you’d give your younger self: “Speak up young lady, prepare yourself for no answer, and you will be pleasantly surprised when it’s a ‘yes’.”
