N
onhlanhla Nyathi, tax accountant blogger, dancer, MC, speaker, and designer shares her journey with us as we celebrate her life as an inspiring young female leader at EY Africa.

EY: Tell us more about your many pursuits both at EY and outside of EY

Nonhlanhla: I am an academic with a very active creative mind. During my work day, I solve tax problems and outside my work day I create. It could be through blogging, writing tax books, poems, mc'ing or dancing. I love theatre whether I'm on or off stage.

EY: How do you think the two roles complement each other and inspire each other?

Nonhlanhla: My day job is somewhat structured and governed by tax laws. Whenever I hit a brick wall, my creative side helps me find new ways of approaching a tax problem, so I can reach the desired outcome. It also helps me think outside the box and in doing that, I question why the law is a certain way and start thinking of how it could be. This process gives me ideas of changes I can suggest during the National Budget consultations in hope that one day they become law.

I have discovered that my creative role contributes more to my soft skills. My character is a product of everything I do, be it at work, home or in the community.

My day job as a tax professional at EY provides strategy which I use even when writing blog posts. My creative role strengthens my character and helps me enhance my skills.

Advice to my younger self:  “Don't be too hard on yourself because you feel like a failure. Failing is part of growth and success and everything happens for a reason.”

Currently reading: I am not reading anything now. I've been taking various leadership courses through the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders learning programmes.

Currently studying: International Tax
