Recent developments with respect to steel derivative products, electric vehicles and the automotive remission framework

There have been several trade developments announced in the last few weeks. Of note, the Steel Derivative Goods Surtax Remission Order, issued in accordance with section 115 of the Customs Tariff, provides relief from the 25% global surtax imposed on imports of certain steel derivative products in accordance with the Steel Derivative Goods Surtax Order.

CBSA adjusts certain fees for inflation and GST/HST

On 24 February 2026, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) published Customs Notice 26-04, Changes to Certain Fees to Reflect Inflation and Taxes, announcing that certain fees it administers will be adjusted for inflation under the Service Fees Act.

CCA and other business income tax measures substantively enacted as part of Bill C-15

On 26 February 2026, amended Bill C-15, Budget 2025 Implementation Act, No. 1, received third reading in the House of Commons and became substantively enacted for Canadian financial reporting purposes.
